Michelin Suggests An Easy Way
to Increase Driving Safety

Wiper Blades Most Overlooked Equipment for Increasing Safety on the Road

LAVAL, QUEBEC – An estimated 90 percent of a motorist’s driving decisions are based on how well they see the road. Having a clear and unobstructed view of the road through the windshield is essential for safety. However, many drivers overlook replacing their worn wiper blades when it should be common practice. According to Michelin, with its leading range of MICHELIN wiper blades, changing wiper blades should be as commonplace as seeing a dentist twice a year and replacing the batteries in the smoke detector at daylight savings time.

Changing wiper blades is one of those tasks often delayed in today’s busy lifestyles, but one of the least expensive and most important steps for driving safety. Many drivers compromise safety by neglecting to inspect and replace wiper blades if they show signs of wear. Wiper blades in good repair can reduce the risk of an accident in rainy or snowy conditions.

“Although replacing wiper blades every six months or 6,000 miles is recommended, many drivers simply overlook the wiper blade,” said Robert Peers, Director of Engineering, MICHELIN Wiper Blades. “What we want drivers to know is that wiper blades are affordable, easy to install and use the latest technology to keep the windshield clearer than ever.”

Most recognize that driving through rain and snow conditions leads to reduced visibility, and many studies have documented the resulting increased accident risk. However, wipers are often forgotten when car owners take their cars in for service.

“Wiper blades may be easy to overlook, but they are critical for clear vision, especially during heavy rain or a tough Canadian snowstorm,” Peers added. “Having a good pair of wipers for wet weather conditions is as important as having a good braking system.”

Safety research reveals that when reduced visibility is a factor, the risk of a collision increases 50 to 100 percent when driving through precipitation. Worn, torn or inefficient blades leave streaks, a film and an inconsistent view of the road that can limit vision or delay driver judgments. In inclement weather, worn blades will not clear water or snow effectively. Though properly maintained wiper blades are an inexpensive way to ensure the clearest sightline in inclement weather, replacement of deteriorated blades is often delayed.

“You can’t predict the weather, but you can be more prepared for it,’’ Peers noted. “Monthly checks of a vehicle’s wiper blades takes less than 10 minutes, and replacement when needed can increase driver visibility and safety.”’

Wiper blade technology has evolved over the years. Today, wiper blades are easy to install and no longer require seasonal replacement. According to Peers, advances in wiper blade technology have evolved from traditional blades to frameless wipers, and now to hybrid technology blades that combine the best of both designs. One example of the latest hybrid technology is the new MICHELIN Stealth™ blade, with patent pending hybrid technology.

The new MICHELIN Stealth hybrid blade’s superior flex design allows the blade to fit the windshield better for superior windshield contact, for clean, powerful and consistent wipes year round. Other unique features of the MICHELIN Stealth hybrid blade include:

  • A protective cover shields components and helps prevent snow, ice and debris buildup for clean, powerful wipes and reliable all-weather performance. This feature also eliminates the need for a special winter blade and helps to extend blade life.
  • An integrated aerodynamic spoiler converts air flow over vehicle into downward force to help the blade maintain contact and reduce lift and vibration, especially in windy weather and at highway speeds.
  • Michelin’s EZ-LOK Connector SystemTM allows easy and quick installation and fits more than 98 percent of passenger cars and light trucks in North America.

The new MICHELIN Stealth wiper blades are sold exclusively through COSTCO Canada. For more information on the MICHELIN Stealth hybrid blade, visit www.michelinstealthblade.com.
